The Pascua Yaqui began issuing the cards on a voluntary basis Monday. The tribe's lands are about 60 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, and many of its 17,000 members have relatives living on both sides of the border. The cards meet the requirements of what's known as the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative — a post Sept. 11, 2001 effort to strengthen U.S. border security.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the way on Friday for California biotech firm Geron ( GERN ) to begin human clinical trials of its experimental embryonic stem cell-based therapy to heal spinal cord injuries in certain paraplegic patients. Geron claims this is the first such trial in humans. The FDA had placed a clinical hold on the drug due to safety concerns: A preclinical animal study showed a higher frequency of small cysts within the spinal cord injury sites injected with Geron's treatment.

Americans are less optimistic that their homes will increase in value during the next 12 months, according to the Chicago Booth/Kellogg School Financial Trust Index, produced quarterly by researchers at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. The latest survey finds that 26 percent of those surveyed think house prices in their area will increase, compared to 31 percent in March. The percentage of people who think home values will decrease remained constant at 20 percent.

As votive candles burned in the summer heat and kids ran in the grass swinging U.S. flags, about 50 people gathered in Memorial Park Thursday to hope for federal immigration reform. "We're here to create a country that we hope to become part of," José Manuel "Periban" Torres, 26, told the crowd gathered for the 7 to 10 p.m. vigil. "We young people are the ones who have to keep at it... to build a country for everyone. We're all of the same world."
